This Week's Fishing Report
With the exception of a few nice days mixed in, fishing on the Indian River Lagoon has been stretchy to say the least. Both the weather and the fish have been challenging, which is typical for mid April. As far as the fish go, the redfish have been schooled up and easy to find, seeing hundreds of fish on each charter. The difficult part of the equation is these tight schools have been extremely spooky and on the move, so you usually only get one shot at the school, and then the chase is on. On a positive note, these schools are starting to spread out providing more shots at single fish and the weather is begriming to settle down and warm up as we move into summer. Also, the sea trout bite is improving as the bait returns to the lagoon.
In Port Canaveral and along the beach, the water has been alive with weakfish and bluefish. Both species along with a mixed bag of whiting, pompano, sheepshead and black drum have been plentiful fishing with clams, shrimp and cut bait outside the jetties and along the surf line. As for the cobia, the spring run has yet to materialize and we can only hope for a late run once the weather settles.
Lastly, the water levels are still extremely low on the St Johns River, so safe access been limited to boats with shallow drafts. There have been reports of menhaden schools showing up in the Government Cut with schooling bass and some sunshine bass feeding at first lights and dusk, so thing are looking better. We just need some rain to rise river levels and thing will light up.
As always, if you need information or have any questions, please contact me.
Good luck and good fishing,
Captain Tom Van Horn
