This Weeks Report
Preceding the full moon and the cold front, our weather was warm and sunny and the bite was on fire, but after As usual, the weather played a prominent role in our fishing this past week, but we still managed some respectable fish both on the St. Johns River and the Indian and Mosquito Lagoons. On the approaching side of the full the front past and cool temperatures arrived the bite slowed down.
Pre-front on the St Johns River I started the week shooting a fishing show with Captain Eric Ciocher of Ultimate Catch TV. Our goal was to fish American Shad and we scheduled two days for the shoot. Well the fishing was so good, we shoot the entire show in one day catching over 50 shad on spinning tackle fishing with shad darts and spoons. After the front passed both the shad and crappie bite slowed significantly, but we still caught some decent fish. As the full moon wanes things should improve and both crappie and Largemouth bass should be on the spawn.
On the lagoons, high pressure, cold temperatures and windy conditions moved the larger sea trout off of the flats and shut down there feeding so we resorted to targeting the larger breeder redfish with bait managing to catch some larger trophy redfish. We did find a large school of black drum up high on the flat, but they were extremely skittish and suffered from a severe case of lockjaw. Again, shifting weather conditions should improve the bite over the weekend, because the fish have to eat sometime. Yesterday, we started seeing some large sea trout moving in from deeper water, so be sure to check the deeper edges as you move on to the flats.
Good luck and good fishing,
Captain Tom Van Horn
