This Week's Fishing Report
We've finally started receiving some significant levels of rain on the Indian River Lagoon coast of Florida this past week, and water levels have increased on both the Lagoons and the St Johns River. Additionally along with this rainfall, higher nutrient levels from runoff are showing signs of increased alga levels in the water in the area of the Haulover Cannel
In the lagoons this past week, higher water levels have spread out the schools and they have been cruising the edges in close feeding on fiddler crabs. In addition, the larger sea trout have begun feeding on top-water plugs and soft plastics at first light in close on the shallow flats. Remember, the larger sea trout are all females and this is their spawning season, so please handle and release these larger females with extreme care.
In Port Canaveral and along the beach, bait pods of Atlantic menhaden have shown up in close to the beach south of the Cocoa Pier and some rather large tarpon are there as well. Squally conditions have limited near-shore fishing to larger vessels, so when seas settle down it's tarpon time on the Space Coast, and I cant wait!.
On the St Johns River, increased rainfall has water levels rising and the menhaden schools are showing up between the Government Cut and Mullet Lake Park with schooling largemouth bass and some sunshine bass feeding at first lights and dusk. Also, increased water levels and current should have the larger catfish on the move, so it's once again time to start soaking bait in the deeper bends of the river.
As always, if you need information or have any questions, please contact me.
Good luck and good fishing,
Captain Tom Van Horn
