Orlando Area and Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report, July 7, 2017

Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Orlando Area and Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report, July 7, 2017

Clearly, there is no better way to enjoy a summer's day in Florida than a good day of fishing and watching the sun rise over the Mosquito Lagoon. This past week on the Lagoon and Port Canaveral we were blessed with gorgeous weather and clean water and some quality redfish, black drum, snook and sea trout.

On the flats the water quality remains good with tons of mullet everywhere. The bait concentrations this year seem to be much heaver than last year. Along with the heavy bait concentrations comes something we did not see last year, floating mats of widgeon grass. Yes the sea grass in coming back thanks to the cleaner water, so let's hope the algae blooms stay away. With that said, floating grass made the top-water plug fishing tougher as the plug become fouled with weeds on just about every cast. Even with the floating grass situation, the top-water plug fishing has been good in the early hours of the morning for sea trout, with equal success throwing DOA Shad Tails rigged weed less.

Out of Port Canaveral the snook bite was good when fishing with live croakers around docks and other structure. There has also been some quality tarpon along the beach.

Lastly, I will be off of the water next week working the ICAST show in Orlando, and in my next blog I will outline my Best of ICAST picks for new products.

As always, if you need more information or have any questions, please contact me.

Good luck and good fishing,

Captain Tom Van Horn
