Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report
Warm + Weather = Fish
It looks like Mother Nature may be teasing us with a taste of Spring. This is more like it! Highs in the upper 70s to low 80s have finally brought water temps back into the upper 60s to 70 degrees. With the warmer water temps fish have become noticeably more active in the feeding department. Jacks and lady fish have moved into shallower water and have been hitting crystal minnows, gold spoons, and top-water plugs with a vengeance, especially in the evening. Large schools of Jacks also have been showing up on the flats the last few days chasing pods of bait fish. These fish have been running in the 5 lb. range but some fish have pushed the 10 lb. mark. Blue fish have been active along the flats, as well as inside the Sebastian Inlet on incoming tides. Blues have been active outside the Inlet on outgoing tides. Tarpon are present in a few areas, but the catch has been spotty. Trout have become much more active. Yes I said trout. I was beginning to think they all had disappeared after the cold weather, the big ones any way. The flats, islands, and edges of both are producing trout to 25”. Most fish are 15 to 18”. The most productive presentations have been top-water and jerk baits.
Mac and Kim Overby from N.C. fished a windy and cool afternoon last week. We decided to stick to the Sebastian River because of the conditions and did well on jacks and lady fish. None of the fish were huge, but the numbers and light tackle left Mac and Kim plumb wore out. Thanks for coming down, it was great fun.
Kevin and his son Mat fished a more pleasant day. Their objective was to catch a bunch of fish so again we hit the Sebastian River. Things started slow but picked up as the afternoon wore on. Mat caught the big fish of the day, a 20 lb gar. Not something you see every day. Way to go Mat! Kevin’s big fish was no slouch either, a 10 lb. jack. A great battle on a light action rod. All and all a very enjoyable afternoon on the water.
If the mild temps continue, fishing should continue to improve. I look for the trout, reds, and tarpon to provide some excitement in the coming weeks.
Until next week.
Tight Lines Everyone!
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron
