Central Indian River Lagoon

Capt. Ron Bielefeld
February 17, 2001
Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Just Fish

Water temps continue to be in the low 70s. Consequently, fish have been active throughout the day, but mornings have been very productive after a dark night (i.e., no moon). Boat traffic has been very heavy on the Indian River around Sebastian (the weather is finally nice enough for the majority of people to get out) which has made the fish in heavily used areas very spooky. This is another reason to pursue fish early in the day. Late evening is another good time if the winds are not too strong.

Trout, jacks, lady fish and a few Spanish have been active on the flats and around the islands. Red fish have been spotted in small numbers but they have not wanted artificials. For trout I have had my best luck on Cotee Glitter Shads retrieved on the periphery of flats in two to four feet of water. Most of the trout have been under keeper size, but numbers have been good (30 fish per trip). The larger fish are scattered and spooky, but a few have been cooperative each trip.

Jacks have been working the flats in schools of 20 to 30 fish. They have been running in the 5-10 lb. range and have hit top-water plugs. The fish are most abundant on an incoming tide and move through fast, so be ready with a bait you can cast a long distance to get to these fish. If you have to stop and change your rig you will most likely miss your chance. If you do get a bait out there, they will not disappoint you. They are hungry and strong.

Lady fish are everywhere in small to large schools, you will hook-up just about anywhere you are fishing for trout except the shallowest flats.

Red fish have been spotted on just about every trip, but they have just not been interested in taking artificial baits. Live shrimp may be an option to try on the shallow flats where these fish are cruising.

The temps have been great, the wind has been pesky, but all in all the fishing is improving. Get out there and give it a try. You can’t catch much sitting at home.

Until next week, keep those lines tight!

Sincerely,

Capt. Ron.
