Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fishing trips were pretty sparse this past week, and the fishing can best be described as spotty. The wind was off and then on and then off again. I guess all aspects of nature have been in concert recently.
Jacks and lady fish have been plentiful around the inlet, flats, and islands. They have been taking surface plugs and soft-bodied jigs. Trout have been abundant at times and then they seem to disappear. Most trout have been in the 14-16” range with a few larger and many smaller. Jigs and jerk baits have been the most effective for these fish when worked around Islands and edges of flats near deeper water. The action on the flats has been very erratic with many big fish being seen but also spooked. Water levels are low, the water is still fairly clear, and the trout appear to know they are on display. Some redfish have been seen cruising the flats and mangrove shores, but they have not shown interest in anything but swimming. My suggestion, keep casting and trying different presentations. Like my dad always said to me, “ the harder you try, the luckier you will get.”
The juvi tarpon are roaming the Sebastian river and can be great fun. However, always remember, these are tarpon, so the minute you think you have them figured out, you don’t! Again, persistence is the key.
The weather will settle down one of these days and the fishing will get more consistent. I am encouraged by the fish I am seeing. It appears there are large numbers of big trout and redfish, so we should have a great spring and summer. The only question in my mind concerns the low water levels. Be careful navigating and spare the flats any more scares that will last a lifetime.
