Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report
Sebastian and Indian River Report
Lately, trout, redfish, and tarpon have been keeping us busy. Tarpon in the Sebastian have been somewhat cooperative up until the last few days of the full moon. They basically have shut off. As the full moon wains things should pick up again. Evenings have been best with 2 hook-ups being the rule.
With the full moon, afternoons and evenings also have been the best for trout and redfish. The wind has been bothersome during these times, but the fish have been active and feeding. As the moon wains, the trout and reds should feed more actively in the morning.
I have been concentrating my efforts in very shallow water for both reds and trout. As usual, we have not been catching large numbers of fish in the very shallow areas, but the fish we have caught, and sometimes lost, have generally been good size. This evening, Dave and Nancy from Sebastian boated several trout. Nancy was able to land one fish around 22 inches. However, we had 3 other fish near the boat that easily surpassed 23 inches. The very low water and high winds made things difficult, but the fish were active. Jigs and top-water plugs were productive on the flats in around a foot of water. Reds have been active in these same areas, but we had no luck on reds tonight. The churned up water made it very difficult if not impossible to spot fish. Bait has been tough to find, but when you find the bait fish, you find the trout and reds. Look for bird activity and you generally will find bait and the predators that feed on them. This is a great time of year to catch a trophy trout, red, or tarpon, but remember, most of these large fish are females, and they are the fish at are the most productive. So keep the smaller males and let the large females go. You will be rewarded with more fish to catch in the years to come.
Until next time, Tight-Lines
Sincerely, Capt. Ron
