Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Indian River Report - Sebastian
Well, the summer pattern is really entrenched and we are getting some rain. The calm mornings have allow double dipping, some inshore flats fishing for trout, reds, and snook during the early hours and near-shore just off the beach fishing for Spanish, kings, jacks and tarpon. You can’t ask for more than that! On top of that the catching has been pretty good.
Trout have been active early on the top over a foot to a foot and a half of water. Key in on the glass minnows and grass edges for the best action. Later in the mornings trout have been hitting SOF spoons and jigs fished along the edges of island flats and points. Redfish have been feeding early to mid-morning in shallow grass and along mangroves and islands. Small schools have provided spotty action. One day you’re on them the next day your not, pretty typical of Sebastian area red fishing. Try SOF spoons, DOA shrimp, and jerk baits for the reds. Small to medium size snook have been hanging around mangrove shores and islands through out the day. Action has been sporadic. Top water and DOA shrimp have been most productive for these fish.
Off the beaches Spanish, Bonito, jacks and kings have been lurking near schools of greenies and glass minnows. The Spanish will hit just about anything that will flash. Keep your baits moving and flashing near the surface for some really fast action. The other species have been taking slow trolled greenies with some regularity. Check out the front page of my web site at www.tightlinefishing.com for a look at the kind of jacks you can run into off the beaches these days. Jig up some greenies, hook up a kingfish rig, and give a try. You will not be sorry you did!
If the weather holds and the seas stay calm we should be in for a lot more great action around the Sebastian area. This is truly an angler’s paradise. Lets all work to keep it that way and even improve it. Don’t run over the flats and tear up the grass, don’t throw garbage over board, practice catch and release, and most of all have fun and keep a good attitude out there. After all this is supposed to be fun, not a race!
Until next time, Tight-Lines to all.
Sincerely, Capt. Ron
