Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Indian River Lagoon-Sebastian Area Report
Over the past week or so the bait run has been in full swing around the Sebastian area and even though the winds have been blowing the catch has been fair to excellent. Mornings have been best because the winds have laid down over night, but fish have been feeding throughout the day. By 10:00am the winds have been picking up dramatically so plan your trips accordingly.
Trout have been plentiful anywhere you can find bait. Top-water plugs have been working well so I have been sticking to them because top-water strikes just add to the fun! Snook also have been pounding top-water. Yesterday, Tom Blackwell from West Virginia witnessed just what a big snook can do to a spook when a fish over 31inches completely cleared the water with the spook in this mouth. This fish was not in the Inlet either, but along a mangrove shoreline where I target most of my snook. The fish put up a good fight and was quickly released at the side of the boat. Even some redfish have been feeding, and we have been catching a few on SOF spoons and top-water. Jacks, some large to 15lbs., and ladyfish have rounded out most recent trips.
To find fish look for bait. Watch the bait pods as they move south and search for fish ripping through them. You can’t get a much better sign of what to expect when you pitch a lure into the vicinity of the action. One thing to remember when fishing around a lot of bait; you must make your lure stand out from the thousands of real bait the predators are targeting. If you do this you will dramatically increase your strike rate. That is why I like top-water in this situation, the plugs make a lot of noise!
Good luck, and Tight-Lines to all.
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron
