Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Indian River Lagoon Report - Sebastian Area
The fishing has been pretty good despite the howling winds and rain over the past few weeks. The bait run was great this year and the snook, reds, trout, jacks, and ladyfish took full advantage of the abundant food, and my clients and I took advantage of their very obvious feeding activity. All the weather has finally moved out and we are having some great fall weather. You can’t beat the fall for fishing the Indian River Lagoon. The flounder have started to move through the Sebastian Inlet. Gulf flounder (3-spots) are hitting on the incoming tides with some gusto for an hour or so. Some larger southern flounder are also being caught, but this bit should get better in a few weeks. Many anglers anchor for flounder and use live bait. I suggest drifting and using jigs with plastics. Give it a try, you might be surprised by the results you get. If you are fishing the rocky areas, try using bottom-bouncer rigs like they do for walleyes up north. These rigs keep your bait just off the bottom and your sinker from getting wedged. This technique will decrease your hang-up rate by over half.
Trout, snook, jacks, ladyfish, and some reds have been active all day and with the calmer conditions you should be able to fish for them throughout the day as well. Top-water plugs have been productive all day long for the larger fish, and jigs with glitter shads have produced bunches of smaller trout on and around the flats and islands in the Sebastian area. Soft spoons have produced most of the reds we have caught over the past two weeks. The most active bites have been during periods with good water movement around the flats, islands, and shorelines. Fish the periods when the tide is moving with some pace and you will increase your catch.
Lets hope for a long period of nice weather. If we get it, some great fishing should be had.
Until next time, Tight-Lines to all.
Sincerely, Capt. Ron
