Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Report-Sebastian Area

Capt. Ron Bielefeld’s fishing report from the Indian River Lagoon and Sebastian River area. This past week the fishing has remained fairly good with trout, reds, snook, and jacks making up a nice mixed bag. Some trips have seen almost non-stop action while others have been slow. Early mornings and late evenings have been good times to find fish feeding actively, but we have been boating fish up until 11:00 am or later. High tide has seen some awesome feeding frenzies on very shallow flats that are out of the water at low tide. Look for the cleanest water you can find, fish the area the last 2 hours before high tide, and most of all be quite if you want to maximize your catch of big fish. By all means avoid areas where boats have ripped across the flats. I know this is easier said than done, but you will be the big fish in more undisturbed areas.

Most of the fish have been coming on top-water plugs making for great fun on light tackle. Remember; do not tighten up on the fish until you feel them when fishing top-water. This will greatly increase your hook-ups. Larger fish are still coming from the very shallow grass flats with smaller fish (mostly trout) holding in 3-5 ft of water off the flats. In the deeper water, jigs with green or root beer colored twister tails have worked well. Give the jigs some abrupt action to elicit the most strikes. A lazy jig has not produced well of late. The Sebastian River continues to provide good action on tarpon late in the evenings. Small live bait has been the most effective. Free line the bait in the vicinity of rolling fish and you should get some action. These fish have been eating the baits quick, so set the hook right a way to avoid gut hooking, or use a circle hook. Get these fish to the boat as quickly as possible, revive them well, and then release them to ensure they survive.
