Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report
Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon Report - Sebastian Area
I made 4 trips this week and we boated 7 different species including sea trout, redfish, snook, jacks, ladyfish, grouper, and a single barracuda. Three out of the four days saw consistent action on trout with the other species adding to the fun. We boated 4 trout over 5 lbs and 2 in the 10 lb class. The most productive techniques were top-water plugs and DOA shrimp. As is the case many times, the larger trout were caught in shallow water. For larger trout, I consistently target flats with grass and water in the 2-foot range. I work lures slowly over (top-water plugs) and in (jigs, jerk baits, etc.) these areas. Larger trout tend to prefer a slower presentation, so I suggest fighting the urge to work your lures too quickly.
Redfish also have been showing themselves on the shallow grass. Most of the fish have been spotted on areas adjacent to deeper water during mid-morning. These fish have been feeding on mullet so they have been hitting top-water plugs presented to them from a distance. This past week we boated the largest red I have taken off the flats, well over 20 lbs. To locate fish when the water is murky, like it has been lately, I look for wakes made by the fish as they move over and feed on the flats. You can also blind cast in areas frequented by fish.
Snook have been on the flats very early and top-water plugs have been productive. As the sun gets higher I have been targeting mangrove shorelines and docks with DOA shrimp. Many of the snook have been small, but a few fish in the 10 lb range have been caught.
My tip of the week: If you want to catch big fish, fish in shallow water of 1 to 2 feet.
So, until next week, Tight-Lines to all.
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron
