Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report
Capt Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon Report - Sebastian Area
Well, I only had one trip this week, but the fishing was good. The trout turned on around 9 am and we had consistent action through noon on top-water plugs. We did not catch anything extremely large, but many of the fish were keeper size. The action picked up when the chop increased, which is not unusual. Baitfish continue to be very thick in the Lagoon around Sebastian and the predatory fish are definitely taking advantage of the abundant food supply. If the bait gets too abundant it can really make it difficult to get fish to hit your offering. Under these conditions I find it effective to move to the periphery of the major bait pods and fish the edge. It becomes an issue of probabilities so you need to increase your odds by targeting fish that do not have some many choices. The trout remain most active in about 2 to 3 feet of water over grass and near schools of bait. Top-water plugs out produced everything else we tried, most likely because they stand out among all the natural bait. Remember, trout season close at the end of the month.
Snook remain active along mangrove shorelines, especially the shorelines that have a bit deeper water and bait. I always try to fish the windward shorelines if the wind is not too strong to effectively fish these areas. The wave action seems to provide optimal foraging conditions for the fish and the wave noise conceals your approach and activities. Snook have been hitting SOF spoons better than DOA shrimp or other jerk baits. Some fish have been coming on top-water, but mostly on the flats early in the day.
We did not catch or really target reds this week.
My tip of the week – When fishing areas with a lot of natural bait and you are having little luck, fish the edges of the bait schools and use a noisy presentation at stands out from the crowd.
Until Next Week, Tight-Lines to All.
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron
