Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report
Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Report - Sebastian Area
The weather this past week or so has been perfect at times and down right impossible to fish in at other times. When the weather has allowed us to fish the way we want to and where we want to the catching has been pretty steady. The best bite for trout has been between the first hour before light and the first hour after. The night bite may be good as well, but I have not been out during those times so I can’t say. One thing is for sure though; the trout bite has not been stellar through the mid-day period. We have had to work hard for the few fish we are catching. The early morning trout have been favoring top-water plugs over shallow grass. This morning we landed one fish over 6 lbs and several in the 20-inch range. The fish we are catching after first light have hit jigs and jerk baits.
Snook have been mixed with the trout. We landed a 15+ lb fish today. Most of the snook we have been catching have been in the 20-inch range. The snook have been taking top-water plugs and shrimp imitations.
Redfish have been difficult to come by lately. We have seen a few fish on the shallow flats, but have not been able to get them to hit.
Jacks and ladyfish are very abundant right now along the edges of the flats and they have been easy to catch if the winds will allow you to fish the deeper areas they are using. Jigs have produced the best for these fish. Hey, they are not much to eat, but they fight great, and when nothing else is cooperating they fill in nicely.
I am hoping that when the weather stabilizes a bit the fish will feed with more regularity on the flats and the catching will improve. Even though the bite has not been red hot, with a little persistence, we are still catching some nice fish. Until next time, Tight-Lines to all.
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron
