Central Indian River Lagoon

Capt. Ron Bielefeld

Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon Report-Sebastian Area

The fishing this past week was again dictated by the winds. Water temps have begun to warm up again after they dipped back into the lower 60s and the fishing has picked up. Trout remained active and snook are becoming more active. Reds have been most active during late morning through the afternoon hours. Larger fish of all the species have been located in shallow water of 1-2 feet as is often the case. Look for reds in the muddy backwaters until water temps get back into the 70s, then look over the sand and grass. The large trout are frequenting their favorite ambush sites in the grass next to sand pockets and also are hanging around with their redfish friends in the muddy areas. The snook have been on the flats and around the mangroves throughout the day.

Top-water action for trout and a few snook has been fair to good through out the day. The chop has helped keep the fish willing to attack prey on the surface, but our productivity was greatly dependant on the individual anglers ability to work the plugs in the rough water with enough authority to attract the fish’s attention. Technique does matter. Reds, snook, and trout are taking Rip-Tide Brand Weedless Shrimp and as well other jigs. New penny, white, and natural colors have been effective. If you want to catch smaller trout in larger numbers then try a Yo-Zuri pins minnow or 3D Fingerling in the deeper water along the edges of the flats. Do not just straight retrieve these lures if you want to elicit a bunch of strikes. Twitch and stop, twitch and stop. I believe we are on the verge of an explosion in fish activity if the water continues to warm up over the next week or so. Some great catching is head, I can feel it! Keep releasing those large trout. They are the females and they are about to spawn. If you kill them they will not produce for us. Take a picture instead. Until next time, Tight-Lines to all.

Sincerely,

Capt. Ron
