Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon Report-Sebastian Area
Well, summer has definitely arrived on the treasure coast; warm, humid early mornings transitioning into hot, humid afternoons punctuated with a thunderstorm or two. For me, this translates into early morning, late evening, and after dark fishing trips. During this time of year I like to break my full day trips into two trips, one four-hour stint in the morning and another in the late evening. You can of course fish during mid-day if you want to, but the fish tend to be most active when the sun is not glaring and the water not boiling. Moreover, fisherman tend to be at there best when they are not withering away under these same conditions.
The surface water temp has been around 81 degrees at dawn. This is a great temperature for snook and the snook bite has been good during recent morning and late evening trips. The snook we have been catching have been on shallow grass flats very early and late, and around docks during other times of the day. We have caught most of our fish on Rip-Tide Brand Jerk Baits and very shallow running lipped plugs like the crystal minnow.
Trout also have been active during the same periods as the snook and in the same locations. Except we also have been catching trout along the deeper edges of flats later in the mornings. We have been catching most of our trout on top-water and shallow-running plugs. Larger plugs have been getting the most attention.
We did not catch any redfish this past week, but we really did not fish for them, so I guess we cannot expect to catch many.
I was not able to do any night fishing during the last full-moon period, but I plan on hitting the next cycle hard. The snook and trout bite should be great. Until next time, Tight-Lines to all.
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron
