Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report
Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon Report-Sebastian Area
I hope everyone had a great Christmas and will have a great new year. After taking a break to head up to Indiana to spend the Holidays with my wife’s family I am back in warm and relatively sunny Florida. The weather was very poor while I was gone so I guess I did not miss much in the way of fishing. Currently the weather is warm and the winds are down. Moreover, water temps are not too cold for this time of year. As a result trout, redfish, bluefish, ladyfish and jacks are active. Fish are being caught throughout the day, but as is almost always the case, there are certain times when the fish feed more than others. 9 am and around 3 pm seem to be the very actively periods as of late.
Small to medium sized trout are using water in the 3-4 foot depth range, while the larger fish are in the shallows foraging by mid-morning and late in the afternoon. The small trout are taking Rip-Tide Brand Weedless Shrimp (these baits continue to be my favorite even after several years) and the Yo Zuri 3D Fingerling. The larger trout are taking the Rip-Tide worked slowly along the bottom either through the grass or in areas with dark muddy bottoms. Redfish are using similar areas to the larger trout and they seem to be most active late in the morning to early afternoon after the wind has picked up a bit. Blue fish have been found around schools of baitfish and have been taking the Yo Zuri worked with a start and stop action. Of course the jacks and ladyfish have been here and there keeping the action going just when the trout action seems to wane.
If the weather stays like it has been, and the long-term forecast does not show any really cold weather on the way, the fishing should remain fairly consistent. Until next time, Tight-Lines to all.
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron
