Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon Fishing Report for snook, trout, and reds-Sebstian Area
The last week’s fishing can be summed up with one word, WOW! Those of you who regularly read my reports know that I tend to tell it like it is. If the fishing has been slow I say the fishing has been slow. I am not one to embellish. Well, this week was anything but slow. We caught everything, snook, reds, trout, tarpon, bluefish, snapper, flounder, jacks, and ladyfish along with a few other odds and ends. A lot of these fish were on the small side, but after all, the Lagoon is a nursery. However, they were not all small. We had reds to 15 lbs, snook to 10 lbs, trout to 6 lbs, bluefish to 5 lbs, and tarpon to 20 lbs.
So you want details. Ok. The trout, reds, and snook have been coming off of the shallowest parts of flats, point, islands, shorelines, etc early and late in the day on top-water plugs such as the Rapala Thunder Dog and Excalibur Super Spook. Later in the mornings and earlier in the evenings we have been fishing these same general areas but in about 3-4 feet of water using shallow diving plugs such as the Rapala X-Rap, Yo-Zuri 3D Minnow, and Rip-Tide Brand Flats Minnow. The top-water action has really picked up in the last few days. We have been working the plugs rather aggressively and the fish have been more than willing to chase and attack. In my opinion you can’t have more fun than catching trout, reds, snook, and a few tarpon on top-water. We have been working the sub-surface lures less actively. A few twitches, and let it sink slowly. Almost all the hits are coming when the lure is stopped. The key, don’t work the lures too fast.
As far as colors go, white when it is light out and gold and black when it is dark or dim. Until next time, Tight-Lines to all.
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron
