Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's trout, redfish, and snook fishing report-Sebastian Area
Sorry for such a long break in between reports, but things get really hectic around the holidays. What a beautiful past couple of days. Water temps are hovering around the 60 degree mark at dawn and creeping up as the day goes on. Accordingly, the fishing has been picked up from about 11 am through until dark. Trout and reds have been the staple, but redfish have been a bit hard to find and to get to hit depending on the day.
If you want small trout stick to deeper water say 5-10 feet near some good shallow structure. Rip-Tide Brand Weedless Shrimp, DOA shrimp, and live shrimp have been the best baits. Don’t work them too quickly, just let them get to the bottom and work them using short jerks every so often. Now if you are looking for larger trout, say in the 4-6 lb range, and I know you are, then stick to the shallows. How shallow, how about 1-2 feet? I know some of you still doubt me, but that is where the big trout are during mid-day when the sun is out and the water has warmed up. Now, getting these fish to hit is not always easy, but it can be done. Today we had two nice fish one 4 lbs and one about 6 along with several other nice keepers. They all came from 1 foot of water. Now, tomorrow trout are fair game again, being that it is Jan. 1. So, if you want catch a few to keep, look shallow. The best lure has been a Rip-Tide 4” minnow or a DOA Cal on a 1/16 oz jig. Again, don’t work the lures too fast, a couple of twitches here and there is all the it takes. Be patient and don’t expect non-stop action.
The redfish have been using the same areas as the larger trout and during the same time of the day. The larger fish have been a bit finicky, but the 18-20” fish have been much more cooperative. The same lures as we have been using for the trout have been working for the reds. If the wind is down the clear water of winter makes for great sight fishing opportunities, something we do not get a lot of in the Sebastian area. Poll or drift slowly over shallow areas with grass and bait and you will see that I am not kidding about the big trout and reds being shallow. Good, luck and save some for me.
Until next time, Tight-Lines to all
Sincerely
Capt. Ron
