Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon trout, redfish, and snook fishing report-Sebastian Area
The latest winds have been out of the south so water temps have been on the rise, peaking above 70 degrees late in the day. This has spurred some pretty good trout and redfish activity from about noon on. However, by this time of the day, the winds have come on strong making fishing a challenge. We have been managing some nice trout and a few reds just about each trip except on those days where the winds have reached over 20 mph. At that point we have been calling it quits.
The trout and reds we have been targeting have been in shallow water of from 1-2 feet deep over scattered grass. Baitfish has been plentiful in these areas, but feeding activity has been impossible to notice due to the stiff chop on the water. We continue to use soft plastics either rigged weedless or on a 1/16 to 1/8 oz. jig. Rip-Tide Brand Weedless Shrimp and Flats Chubs have been producing well. The best colors have been new penny and golden glow. We have been working these lures at a moderate to slow pace with a long pause in between. The fish have either been slamming them hard or just lazily sucking them, so you have to stay on you toes paying attention to any small indication of a strike. Which has been difficult in the high winds.
The forecast is for highs in the 80s over the next week, so the afternoon fishing should remain good as water temps move above the 70 degree make. Afternoon also should be the best time because we are coming up on a full moon, which tends to make the morning bite slow. Unfortunately, the winds are supposed to be in the 15 mph range by the afternoons. This will continue to make fishing a challenge. Oh well, you can’t have it perfect all the time. If you want to fish, go fish, you can always catch a few on this wonderful lagoon, no matter what the conditions. Until next time, Tight-Lines to all.
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron Bielefeld
