Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon trout, red, and snook fishing report-Sebastian Area
March is known for wind and that is what we have had most days so far this month. Despite the wind we have been getting out and catching some fish. Water temps have been ranging from the mid-60s in the mornings to the upper-70s by late afternoon. With the full moon just waning and the high tides and warmer water temps occurring in the afternoon the best bites have been in the afternoons. Trout, reds, and snook have graced us with their presence on recent trips, but by far the most abundant species to eat our offerings has been trout. We have been encountering all three species in 1-3 feet of water in areas with scattered grass and abundant bait. Sound familiar? Some of the best areas have been windward edges and points as the bait has been pushed up against these areas making them an easy target for predators. Although fishing these areas is not easy with a 15-20 mph wind breathing down your neck it is often worth the effort. Our choice of lures has been mainly soft plastics rigged on jig heads or weedless. Again, sound familiar? Rip-Tide Brand Flats Chubs have been working well when retrieved at a medium pace with a good one-second pause. Most of the fish are hitting it on the drop or when the lure is at rest. A few more snook have been showing themselves out on the shallow flats and the numbers should continue to increase as the water warms through the next couple of months. As an example, a good friend of mine landed a lifetime snook on the flats last evening just as it was getting dark. The fish weighed 22 lbs and hit a soft plastic jerk bait. That is an awesome fish to catch anywhere let a lone on the flats! Way to go Al! Until next time, Tight-Lines to all.
Sincerely,
Capt. Ron
