The full moon has really squelched the early morning bite the last few days. An example, we set out this past Thursday morning at O-dark-thirty to tape an episode of Adventures in Saltwater TV. The past week I had been doing extremely well on all species snook, trout, and reds. Well, the trip got off to a great start as within the first 5 casts we had a 5+ lb trout and a nice red to our credit, but then the switch was moved to the off position and the bite just stopped. It appears the all the larger fish had fed during the night in the light of the full moon and were now finished with their meals. Oh we caught more fish during the next 5 hours (8 snook and 2 trout) to be exact and had several nice follows by some big reds, but all the fish we caught were small and not worthy of any kind of TV coverage. Oh well, that is the way the camera bounces. Since Thursday we have caught a few nice fish very early in the mornings, but again most of the fish we are catching are small after the sun comes up. Late evenings have been good, but the wind has come mighty strong most evenings to preclude any great results.
Water temps have continued their up and down ride with the passing of some weak cool fronts, so the fish have been using pretty much the same areas as they have been over the last month. We have been focusing on shallow water flats and points. Where exactly we we have been fishing has depended on wind direction and overall water movement. Where the current has been flowing around these areas is where we have been concentrating. By far the most productive lures have been the Yo-Zuri 3D Fingerlings. These lures have accounted for some very nice snook, reds, and trout. We have been working them with a stop and go action over water from 6 inches to 2 feet deep. When worked with a high rod they only dive a few inches under the surface. If you drop you rod tip it will dive up to 3 feet. The best thing is when you pause your retrieve the lure suspends, it just freezes. This appears to be the difference, no movement, the fish just can’t stand it, they must hit it. Even on the slow days these lures produce at least a few fish. Another great combo continues to be the Rip-Tide Brand Flats Chub rigged on a jig. These lures have been producing around deeper structure as well as on the flats. They have been especially productive around spoil islands and docks.
The top-water bite is still off. I believe it has to do with the very clear water. The fish just do not want to present themselves to all the predators lurking above like osprey and pelicans. If the water clouds up a bit the top-water bite should pick up. That is not to say you can’t catch anything on top right now, it just has not been a hot bite.
