Central Indian River Lagoon

Capt. Ron Bielefeld

Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon trout, snook, and redfish fishing report-Sebastian Area

It appears light, as in moon and sun light, has been having even more of an effect on when fish are feeding than it typically does. Yes, it always influences fish behavior, but currently, the water is very low and clear and thus the light from the sun and moon is penetrating down deep into almost all habitats in the Sebastian area increasing its influence. This means when the sun comes up it moves fish to seek cover quicker. In turn, at night, the moonlight, if the moon is out, lights things up more and thus allows fish to feed effectively on the very shallow flats. So, during this current full moon the larger fish have been feeding all night long and shutting down such activities as soon as the sun peaks over the horizon. Sure, some fish can still be caught during the mornings, but the best action by far has been from midnight on through first light. We have been targeting the edges of exposed flats and there are a lot of exposed grass flats out there at the moment during all tide stages. To home in on your targets, look for, or should I say listen for, bait and fish feeding activity. When we have found fish we have had the best success on medium to large top-water plugs such as the Yo-Zuri Banana boat, hydro pencil, and hydro popper. I suggest sticking with the walk the dog type plugs when the water in calm and using the poppers when there is a bit of a chop. The trout have been hitting plugs worked with a stop and go action and the snook have been looking for a more constant retrieve, so vary your retrieve to target both species. As long as the water levels stay low and the water stays clear the amount of light out there on the water will play a very important role in when fish feed. I know I will be out at night during full moon periods as long as these habitat conditions persist. If I have to fish during the day light I will be turning to my favorite sub-surface lures the Yo-Zuri 3D fingerling and the Rip-Tide Brand Flats Chub. Until next time, Tight-Lines to all.

Sincerely,

Capt. Ron
