Central Indian River Lagoon

Capt. Ron Bielefeld
December 4, 2006
Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon trout, red, and snook fishing report-Sebastian area

The weather has warmed a bit, at least for the moment, and hey, we had a couple of days when the wind was not blowing 20 mph. However, the fishing on the flats around Sebastian has remained slow even though the weather was relatively hot. We found large trout and reds loafing around the very shallow backwater areas, but most of these fish were in no mood to eat. We spent hours trying to get these fish to even look at our offerings that included soft plastic minnow and shrimp imitations and live shrimp, but we only had two takers – a nice 5 lb trout and one slot red. Switching gears and fishing the drop-offs around the islands and flats improved out catch rate a bit on small to medium sized trout and ladyfish, but overall the action was still slow and we had to work hard for our hits. Yo-Zuri 3-D Fingerlings and Rip-Tide Brand Mud Minnows, Flats Chubs, and Weedless Shrimp all caught a few fish. We will just have to keep trying, as winter can be a trying time to catch fish consistently. Oh well, I look at it this way. At least we don’t have to wear snowmobile suits and drill holes in the ice to fish here in east central Florida in winter. Moreover, we are still catching fish, just not every other cast. The weather people call for a bit of a cooling trend over the next week. Thus, I suggest fishing the deeper edges until late afternoon, when, if water temps rise enough and it is sunny, a detour into the backwater areas may be warranted. If the water temps drop below 70 slow your presentations down and reduce the size of your offerings. I prefer shrimp imitations when the water is cool or cold. Live shrimp are great when it gets really cold. Look for large trout and redfish to be hanging out in the backwater areas and smaller trout to be in the deeper holes and along the deeper edges of flats and islands.

Until next time, Tight-Lines to all,

Capt. Ron
