Central Indian River Lagoon

Capt. Ron Bielefeld
March 3, 2007
Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's-Indian River Lagoon trout, redfish, and snook fishing report-Sebastian Area

The weather sure warmed up the last week or so, but the winds also picked up and now another cold front is pushing through the area. Ah March, we can look for continued unsettled weather and the frustrations that come along with these conditions as we fight for quality time on the water. However, when the conditions allow for it, the catching can be great.

We have been catching some really nice trout and reds along with numbers of smaller trout, snapper, and ladyfish. Deeper holes have been holding the small trout, snapper, and ladies, and the larger trout have been roaming the shallows and medium depths. Some good grass still persists on the more open flats and we have found large trout and slot reds cruising these areas. When the wind has been down Rip-tide Brand Weedless Shrimp and Yo-Zuri 3D Fingerlings worked slowly over and through the grass and along the edges have produced fish. The water level is very low right now so getting to some of the best areas can be tricky, but the deeper pockets and edges on these flats have been holding some nice fish.

The water did cool off enough to push some nice fish back into the very shallow mud bottom pockets and we have been getting a few of these fish to hit. Late afternoons have been the best times to find these fish when they are willing to eat. Blustery conditions have made sight fishing for them difficult, but blind casting soft plastics rigged weedless or on very light jigs has produced at times. Rip-Tide Brand weedless shrimp and Realistic Shrimp have been the working (new penny type color patterns). We have had a few fish take the Yo-Zuri 3D Fingerling as well. We have been working them very slowly and just letting them suspend for long periods. The fish are taking them as they are sitting still. During the colder, cloudy days live shrimp free-lined in the deeper holes have been producing the small trout and ladyfish.

As we move on through March and into April warmer weather should prevail over the cold fronts and fish feeding activity should become more and more consistent. If the winds don’t blow too often and too hard there should be some really good fishing on the way for reds, trout, snook, and tarpon.

Until next Time, Tight-Lines to all.

Sincerely, Capt. Ron
