Central Indian River Lagoon

Capt. Ron Bielefeld
March 31, 2007
Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon trout, snook, and redfish fishing report-Sebastian Area

This past week we finally had a couple of days where the wind was not blowing over 20 mph and water temperatures continue to be in the low the mid 70s. This added up to some great fishing and even some good catching. On the flats, trout were the heavy hitters with a few reds and even some snook mixed in. Nice to see the snook venturing back out onto the flats as the water warms. The reds and snook were not large, but hey, they sure add some variety. Jacks, ladyfish, and bluefish also cooperated at times. With the water temps in the mid 70s we were throwing medium sized top-water plugs from the very beginning and starting our trips at first light to take advantage of the calmer winds. Spook Jrs., Skitter Walks, and Yo-Zuri Banana Boats all enticed fish to strike. We had some really nice trout (5 lbs. +), ladyfish, and blue fish busting the surface. Yo-Zuri’s 3D Finglerings and their new Jerk-Os also worked well. Rip-Tide Brand soft plastics such as the Flats Chub and Weedless Shrimp also produced a number of fish. We spent most of our time drifting shallow flats, but also found fish along the west shoreline, around spoil islands, and along the windward edges of flats. The wind tends to pile bait up along these edges and the big predators take advantage of the abundant food. Because of the mild water temps we were working our lures with a moderate pace, but always mixed in a pause to give the fish a chance to eat our offerings. If the wind stays manageable and the water temps remain above the 70-degree mark the fishing should stay productive. Look for bait around structure such as grass, docks, edges of flats, island points, and deeper mangroves and you will find fish. Be patient and work your presentations with a slow to moderate pace and you will get strikes. Until next time, Tight-Lines to all. Sincererly,

Capt. Ron
