Central Indian River Lagoon

Capt. Ron Bielefeld
January 10, 2008
Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Ron Bielefeld's Indian River Lagoon trout, redfish, and snook fishing Report-Sebastian Area

The waters around Sebastian continue to warm back up after the brief cold spell continuing a very unusually warm winter. Water temps are in the mid 70s by the end of the day and should continue to warm as more warm weather is predicted over the next few days. This unusual weathers seems to have the fish in a constant state of flux making catching difficult at times. On top of being warm the water is very clear in many areas making stealth very important if you want to catch the large trout and redfish.

Most of the fish we have been catching over the past couple of weeks have been small to medium sized trout. Ladyfish also have been abundant. We have been seeing and catching a few redfish here and there, but nothing consistent. Most of the flats are devoid of grass, so we have been concentrating on the drop offs around the edges of flats and islands, holes, and humps to find fish. Larger trout and reds are cruising the shallow mud and sand, but they have been very difficult to catch. The most productive lures have been 1/8th oz. jigs with day glow Rip-Tide Weedless Shrimp. If the water gets any warmer the 3D Fingerling should start to produce more and more fish, given we are still catching a few on it now. Productivity around the docks has slowed as the waters have warmed. The black drum and sheepshead that relate to this structure have spread out onto the adjacent flats making these fish tough to catch.

Overall, we are still catching fish, but you have to work a bit to do it, especially if you want bigger fish. If the water gets into the upper 70s to near 80 before the next cool front, I will be getting out early and bringing out the top-water plugs to go after the larger fish. Can you believe that, top-water in January! I will take that anytime.

Sincerely,

Capt. Ron Bielefeld
