Mosquito Coast Fishing Charters
I started my fishing adventures this week out of Parish Park in Titusville on Saturday in support of Kid’s Fishing Day. This annual event is organization and promoted by The Backcountry Fly Fishing Club, Captain John Kumiski, and the YMCA of Orlando. If you ever get the chance to volunteer for it, don’t pass it up. For many of these kids, it’s their first experience on the water and it’s worth all the effort to witness their excitement and enthusiasm as they hit the Lagoon on quests for their first fish.
I departed the dock early with several goals in mind. First, I would net some live finger mullet for bait. Next, I planned on trying to do my part for Brevard Clean-up day by cleaning up discarded trash off of one of the near-by spoil islands. For the life of me, I cannot fathom why people who come to the water for the enjoyment of the fresh air, camping, and fishing can leave such a mess. Once my trash detail was done, I returned to the dock to meet up with Adrian and Todd. Both these young men were very courteous and eager to learn. Our actual angling time was less than three hours, but they did manage to catch two really nice slot trout, and of course, their share of hard head catfish.
On Wednesday, Captain Henry Cross and I hit the Titusville area for a morning of scouting for the Plumber’s Tournament scheduled for today and tomorrow, and we came upon an ugly site. Once again in the area adjacent to the Port Saint Johns power plants, we found a significant fish kill, which included catfish, pinfish, and puffers. Hopefully, the cloudy days we are experiencing this weekend will not add to the oxygen deficient 110-degree discharge effecting a greater number of species.
Today, I fished the first day of the Plumber’s Tournament, and despite the nasty weather all of the thirteen guide angler teams managed nice catches. On my crew, I had Pete and Ralph, both proving to be excitent anglers. We head south out of Kennedy Point and quickly located the largest herd of rat reds I’ve seen in while. They were tucked tightly under a dock on the west shore and they cleaned out my stash of live shrimp in a matter of an hour. It’s hard to say how many we caught, but I’m guessing at least thirty. Out of the bunch, we did manage to put two slot fish in the boat. The highlight of the day was a nice 34-inch red caught by Ralph, which didn’t score in the slot fish event. All in all, it was a great day on the water and we had a great time, and yes we got our tails soaked to the bone.
As always, if you need information or have questions, please contact me.
Good luck and good fishing,
