Mosquito Coast Fishing Charters

Well the Port Canaveral launches are open, but the mullet have vacated the premises. Yes it’s true we are in the middle of the fall mullet run, but be sure to pick up some jumbo shrimp if you plan on fishing the Port this weekend.

This past week, I fished the Port on three occasions, and the details are as follows:

Saturday evening I launched at 3pm, with a plan of catching bait and then meeting my clients at 5pm. I as a rule I try to have bait in the well before I meet my clients. Headed west towards the bridge and found only scattered mullet swimming deep, and I managed only a couple dozen before returning to the dock. Last week, the jetties were loaded with bait so I figured we would catch more once we started fishing, not!

We arrived at the North jetty and several boats were slamming the slot reds up close to the beach North of the jetty in the forbidden zone, but with customers on board, I didn’t want to chance it, so we anchored on the South side of the North jetty to no avail. About 6pm, our bait supply was running thin, so we motored all the way back to the bridge to catch some more. Just as we returned, NASA Security was in the process of running everyone out. It’s funny how the fish always know where the no fishing zones are.

To make a lone story short, we fished all over the South jetty and around the docks, and we headed home about 10pm, with our tails between our legs and stinking to high havens.

Returned at 6am Sunday morning with my good friend Dave, with hopes of doing better. The tide was low and we launched at the back ramp. I knew it was going to be an adventure when Dave took a major spill on a ramp that was slicker than duck poo. Again, Dave, the bait, and the fishing were tough. We fished hard all morning and we only managed 5 slot redfish off of the north jetty.

My next adventure was on Tuesday morning at 7am when I met up with Scott, another good friend and seasoned Lagoon angler. Again the mullet situation was difficult, so this time we returned to Sunrise Marina for 3-dozen hand picked shrimp. We started off working the North jetty, but another guide had already stationed his clients on the north tip, so we anchored on the south side of the North jetty again to no avail. Next we moved to the south jetty where Scott missed a nice upper slot snook, tossing a jumbo shrimp up next to the rocks. It stripped off some line, jumped twice, and then cut him off on the rocks. Soon the seas began to pick up as a rainsquall blow in, and we relocated back to the North jetty where the guide, Captain Jerry Solan of Tom & Jerry’s Pro Guide Service, relinquished his spot on the north tip to us, thanks Jerry. Soon we began to slam the fish catching slot reds, small black drum, and undersized snook. Most of our fish were taken on live shrimp.

I’m not sure why the finger mullet have moved out, but I know the bait runs down the beach in waves. Hopefully, the bait will return soon. Until then, you might want to pick up some shrimp, just in case.

This will be my last report for a week or so, as our resent summer squalls have transformed me from a happy fishing guide into an unhappy roofer.

As always, if you have any questions or need information, please contact me.

Good luck, and good fishing,

Captain Tom Van Horn
