Mosquito Coast Fishing Charters

As fall pushes in on the Space Coast of Florida, passing cold fronts often stack the deck with tough fishing conditions. Such was the case this past week as anglers were challenged by a strong northeasterly fetch off of the Atlantic. The rain and wind arrived on Wednesday and the wind continued to howl through the weekend limiting opportunities to safely venturing out on the water. Rough conditions eliminated most prospects for sight fishing inshore and completely shut down any chances of venturing out offshore.

Faced with the fore mention weather conditions, three of my last five adventures on the water were either postponed or canceled all together. More than most, I realize the importance of spending time on the water stretching line, but we all know that Mother Nature rules in the weather department. As for my time off of the water, it was well spent on honey-dos, and getting my boat and equipment in shipshape condition for when the wind finely lies down. Also, it is important to take advantage of the nice days between fronts, so once the weather clears, don’t procrastinate.

My best day on the water last week came on Tuesday the 31st, where I ventured into the Banana River No-Motor Zone accompanied by my good friend Captain John Kumiski. The wind was calm at first, and then quickly built steadily from the east topping out at about 15 knots. Despite the blustery conditions, we finished the day catching seven redfish, four of which were caught by John on a black Clouser fly. The fish were concentrated on the shallow sand bars, but they were not actively feeding. We also had shots at some cruising black drum, but they turned their noses to our offerings.

My next and final adventure for the week was with Bill Byron from Orlando. The forecast called for rain and wind, but Bill was determined to give it a shot, and I was determined to oblige him. Our goal for the charter was to introduce Bill to the Mosquito Lagoon Push Pole Zone and some techniques for catching redfish on artificial baits. Shortly after daybreak we settled in on our first spot locating a nice school of slot redfish, and Bill managed several nice blow-ups on a mullet colored Storm Chug Bug. I should have known better than to use Storm bait on a day like that, because storm it did, and besides getting skunked, we also got soaked. All in all, the day wasn’t a total loss, because Bill still learned his way around the Troll/Pole Zone.

In closing, be sure stop by and visit me at the Florida Sportsman Fishing Expo in Orlando on Saturday and Sunday the 11th and 12th at the Coastal Angler Magazine Traveling Lagoon Booth. Captain Rodney Smith will be available on Saturday to sign his latest book, “Catching Made Easy”, and the booth will be manned professional lagoon guides and CAM staff to assist you with any questions.

I would also like to mention latest Moving Fishing Work Shop covering Port Canaveral, Merritt Island, and Cocoa Beach presented by Captain Rodney Smith, instructor, author and IGFA world record holder. The Secrets of Success Moving Fishing Work Shop will be conducted on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006 from 8 - 1:30 pm. To get further details on the workshop visit www.coastalanglermagazine.com
