Indian River Lagoon Coast Fishing Report, August 18, 2007

Well the summer heat and doldrums are still on, and the early morning hours produced some good catches both inshore on the flats and near-shore along the beach this week.
The bulk of my charters this past week were out of Port Canaveral, and with seas less than two feet, we covered a significant amount of water. Although the fishing was good for the most part, the biggest problem has been locating baitfish. Pogie pods have been nonexistent along the beach and in the Port, so your best bet is to sibiki threadfin herrings, or carry along a box of frozen Spanish sardines.
My week started out on Monday where I managed to catch a couple dozen pogies between the north jetty and the pier, and then locating a small concentrated group of tarpon. The tarpon bite was hot and heavy, and I jumped five silver kings and landed two with the largest in the 100-pound range. After the beach bite slowed, I moved out to the buoy line and quickly jumped a large kingfish that bit through my leader at the boat.
The bite was much slower on my next three charters and the live bait was still slim to none, so we were forced to throw artificial baits. Nonetheless, we still managed several nice tarpon strikes, some hefty jacks, Spanish mackerel, and kingfish throwing 4 inch Storm Wild-eyed Shad, and D.O.A. Bait Busters. Most of the fish were taken within 100 yards of the beach, and the kingfish were caught on 8A Reef.
Inshore on the flats, our success came from working top water plugs early, and chunking ladyfish once the early morning bite shut down. I only managed the one day on the Lagoon, but we did locate three different groups of larger redfish and ending the day with 4 redfish up to 30-pounds. The larger redfish were in groups of 15 to 20 fish, and they were pushing hard and circling around as though they were getting ready for the spawn.
