Good Top Water Trout

Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The wind continues to be bothersome at times, but we have been catching fish. Trout have been the mainstay, but snook have been active especially late in the day. Water temps are in the upper 70s to low 80s which is in the comfort range of most species we are after. Moreover, the amount of bait fishes in the Lagoon has been steadily increasing along with the water levels. As the bait fish numbers have increased we have been changing over from lures that imitate shrimp to those that imitate fish. The most productive lures have been the Rip-Tide Brand Curtailer in the night glow color pattern and the Yo-Zuri 3D Fingerling in the Clear Minnow pattern. As usual, most of the larger fish, (Trout to 6 lbs and snook to 12 lbs) have been on the very shallow flats and these fish have been feeding on these areas from first light to around noon. Smaller trout have been hanging around the drop-offs of islands and the edges of flats in water up to 5 feet deep. Top-water action has been good over the very shallow flats early and even later in the day if the chop is up. The most productive top-water lure has been the Yo-
Zuri Banana Boat in the new Green Prism color pattern. It looks like we are pretty much done with the cold weather. So, the current fishing pattern should hold for a while until it starts to get really warm. It is time to look forward to getting out off the beaches and catching some nice Spanish, Bonita, and Tarpon. That time is just around the corner. Until next time, Tight-Lines to All.
Sincererly,
Capt. Ron Bielefeld
