Very Windy Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report, April 11, 2017

Capt. Tom Van Horn
April 11, 2017
Indian River Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

All of my charters since my last report have occurred on the Mosquito Lagoon in the wind, thus this week's very windy Mosquito Lagoon fishing report.

Although Central Florida is experiencing extremely dry and windy weather conditions, anglers on the lagoon have been faced with both blustery winds and quality site fishing. Current water clarity remains good with the exception of wind driven and fish generated turbidity, so both lure and fly fishing have been good.

In the early morning around first light we have been starting with some great top-water plug sea trout action just outside the major sandbars in 18 to 24-inches of water (deeper side). My top-water plugs of choice this week have been the High Roller and Rip Roller in the Florida Special color and most of these trout have been of the smaller variety, but great fun nonetheless. When my anglers get their fill of top-water action and the sun grows brighter, we have been having good results throwing DOA 4-inch jerkbaits. As sight fishing conditions improve, we've been doing well sigh casting to tailing and pushing redfish, black drum and sea trout up shallow on the flats.

Surprisingly even with the full moon, yesterday's clients, Jon, Eric and Ian enjoyed nonstop action, ending the day with five over slot black drum, two slot redfish and at least twenty spotted sea trout up to 27-inches.

While the fishing has been great, I did have two charters canceled due to extreme weather conditions, but as we reach further into the month our weather should begin to settle some.

As always, if you need information, have any questions or would like to book a charter, please contact me.

Good luck and good fishing,

Captain Tom Van Horn
