Islamorada - Saltwater Fishing Report
Capt. Rick Stanczyk fished a half day this gorgeous Saturday morning 3/19/11. We left out around 7:30 a.m. of Bud n' Mary's in Islamorada, Florida. There has been some muds close by about 20 minutes away from the marina with some trout and ladyfish in them. We caught half a dozen nice keeper size trou 15-20 inchers, and a bunch of ladyfish with a handful of larger ones that were very fun on light tackle. Also caught some jacks and a big bluefish while doing that. After an hour and a half of that we decided to put the big rods out for some sharks off one of the banks I like to fish nearby that area. We hooked a big blacktip and let off the push pole to drive down on him and catch him. We went back to the spot and put the baits out again, about 5 minutes later - BOOM - big splash and hooked an 80 lb tarpon behind the boat. Unfortunately he jumped so wildly he straightened the hook even with my angler having the rod pointed at him. Still cool to get a good jump out of them right behind the boat like that. After that we put them back out for our last few minutes of fishing and the line started racing around behind the transom. Felt like a smaller fish so I hooked him as my angler was a little gunshy to try again and handed it to him, and then the fish took off straight off the back of the boat to the west. We let off our pole again and chased him down. A nice 90 lb hammerhead!!! 3rd one I've caught this week all in totally different areas which is cool to see, they usually show up this time of year following the schools of bait and such. Anyways, glad to have an afternoon off after a long 20-something day stretch of full days, fishing the next week here then time for a short vacation before getting back to it in April!!!
