Islamorada - Saltwater Fishing Report
This week produced good fishing action both offshore and inshore. Sunday, I had a half-day afternoon backcountry trip out of Key Largo. I launched the boat and head back into the park. Fishing wasn't red hot, but OK. We caught some small cuda, a few five pound Jack Crevalles, a twenty inch Redfish which we released and saw two keeper Snook which wouldn't eat. All the action came on top water plugs and gold spoons.
Earlier in the week, I had Wesley Pollard of West Virginia out for a day, looking for Dolphin. We didn't have to travel far to locate fish, about fourteen miles. A nice weed line marked the area. I slowdown, put out three lines, trolled about 50 yards and all three poles arched over. We stayed on this line for a couple of hours. Keeping a half a dozen nice schoolie dolphin for dinner, and releasing another dozen. We headed further offshore in hopes of finding a bigger fish, but to no avail. A little disappointing, because the week before, I tried the same strategy and found a nice bull for Dan Backman of Sunrise.
Thursday, I went out on a busman's holiday with a friend of mine. We went out 20 miles without much success, only one dolphin. We turned around and ran to the Islamorada hump, there were birds hitting the water and fish breaking on top. We caught all the Blackfin tuna we wanted some over ten pounds. The fish were full of Spanish Sardines.
On Friday I had a morning tarpon trip. We had a lot of action with sharks, cuda and more important three Tarpon. Ray Endress, from New Jersey, landed a 90 pounder after a half hour fight.
