Upper Florida Keys & Islamorada

Islamorada - Saltwater Fishing Report

Over the past couple of weeks, the fishing in Islamorada has been very good. In the big blue the word has been DOLPHIN--Dorado. There was a dry spell a week ago, but they are back on track again. Earlier this week, we hit them 10 miles out. One drawback is that there has been a lack of big fish, and some of the schoolies are very small. I have been picking up the big fish on my long line with a rigged ballyhoo as we been fighting another fish. The fish have been under birds. There been some Blackfin and Skipjack tuna around a friend of mine caught some 20+ pound Blackfin at the West hump last weekend.

The reef fishing has been good when condition are right. Last Saturday, we caught our limit of snappers with most of the fish in the 17 inch range and off the bottom we caught a 4 pound mangrove and a 5 pound Mutton. We also had some small schoolies Dolphin come into are chumslick.

In the backcountry the water has been too hot, and the fishing too cold. There has been some trout around Sandy Key. Too hot for me.

Tarpon fishing has been very good, with a lot of big fish around. I have been catching them on Pinfish, Crabs, and Pilchards. However, the last two trips produced no tarpon on the live baits. I think the extreme tides we been having was the problem. The people fishing dead baits still caught fish. My next tarpon trip will be a chumming and chunking one.

Book a trip with a full-time pro. Call 800-320-2753.

Izzy
