Islamorada - Saltwater Fishing Report

I have to apologize for not issuing a report for quite a while. Since 9/11, charters have been nonexistent. So I went away for a couple of weeks. I been working on the boats and redoing my equipment. Last week I did run some trips. The reef has been good on the deep ledges there have been some nice black groupers on the bottom, and kings, cero and yellowtail in the chum slick. The water temperature in the bay has dropped creating good conditions on the shallow patches, We fished them and caught red and gag groupers along with some nice mangrove and mutton snappers. Live bait produced the best fish with fresh ballyhoo a close second. The hoo came up behind the boat as we chummed a couple throws of the net give us enough for the day. Last Wednesday the 28th, there was a good bite of dolphin in 300 feet of water. I haven't caught or hear of much in the way of sailfish activity lately, but they should be out there. In the bay, the cooler water has produced some good catches of Spanish Mackerel in the Springer Bank area.
