Upper Florida Keys & Islamorada

Islamorada - Saltwater Fishing Report

Over the past few weeks the fish in Islamorada has been great. the sailfish have been thick in the 200 foot range. They are feeding on Spanish Sardines- "balling them." I have had my best success with live cigar minnows. I fished live ballyhoo one day and the action was slow. However. on most days we been having multi-hookups. Mixed in with the sailfish action have been some Dorado. The kingfish have been biting for us in the 130 foot range; again using the live minnows. The weather of late has cooled the water down to 70 which has shut down the yellowtail action for me. However, the patches remain productive. I fished several days in Miami over the last couple of weeks. Government cut is loaded with bait. I fished the bay one day, due to the wind blowing 25mph out of SE. We only found jacks. Another day the whether allowed us to go outside. We saw two sails but no hookups. We did keep busy with bonitos and kings. The kings were in 60 to 80 feet of water.

In the backcountry, we been having some good days. Two weeks ago I had two anglers Alex and John out at Nine Mile Bank. We were fishing the deep cuts. Alex's first cast produced a 50 # Tarpon; after 20 minutes we released him. On the next drifted, it was John turn. As he worked the jig on the channel edge; a 25# permit inhaled it. Fifteen minutes later it too was released. The rest of the trip; we caught ladyfish, trout, jacks and sharks. This was my last trip in the back because the water had cooled off and became very dirty.

Take a kid fishing with a full-time pro; call 1-800-320-2753.
