Upper Florida Keys & Islamorada

Islamorada - Saltwater Fishing Report

Since the last report the fishing has improved. Most recently; I had Joe and Susan Cohen from Boston, Mass. out for three days. On each day, we had a Sailfish on and got two of the three to the boat. In addition, they caught kingfish, Dolphin, Cero Mackerel and two Cobia one of which weighted in at 40 pounds. Fishing wasn't hot; we had to work for the fish, but it worked out. I made two dolphin trips offshore. On one trip, I found two pallets both of which had fish under them; schoolies from 5 to 10 pounds. However, on a second trip out to 22 miles; I found nothing no wood nor birds. I ran back in to save the day. Live baited the edge of the reef and caught Kings to 30 pounds. Most of the action has been concentrated from 100 to 300 feet of water with kings, dolphin, Cobia and sails supplying the action.

On the reef, the snapper action has not been consistent. Some days you get them other days you don't. However, with this wind and the spawn coming up the action should really improve.

In the backcountry, there are still a load of trout around along with ladyfish, jacks, and large blacktip and lemon sharks. A lot of big Tarpon have moved in to the channels over the last two weeks. There have been some pods cruising the ocean side flats waiting for someone the throw a fly at them. I think we will try this week. I have been doing good with live bait in the late afternoon and evening. Even with this wind; I have caught them; again they been big fish 70 plus pounds. I caught a nice one Sunday night, but it was hard fighting a fish, wind, and waves. The angler did a real good job considering he was fighting the fish, trying not the fall and keeping the boat from blowing over the fish. I took off last night hoping conditions would improve tonight.
