Islamorada - Saltwater Fishing Report

Since my last report the fishing has been good; however the whether has been very bad. We had strong thunder storms and high winds everyday for over two weeks. When we did manage to get out, the fish cooperated. I had a customer from England he booked 4 trips, we were able to get out twice due to whether we did one tarpon trip and landed a 90 pounder and offshore for dolphin he and his daughters release over 50 schoolies dolphin; we kept 4 deep hooked ones for dinner. We found no big fish. Overall the dolphin fishing has been spotty one day you find them the next you don't. One good thing is that there has been a school of 5 to 10 pound king mackerel in 150 foot of water taking up the slack when the dolphin aren't around. Saturday there were all the dolphin you wanted in 350 to 450 feet of water and yesterday we when out to 800 feet without seeing one. That's the way its been.
One nice thing about the bad whether is that anchoring on the reef has been comfortable. Both the Yellowtail and Mangrove (Gray) snappers are in the pre-spawn mood and eating. The fish are nice size we been get both to over three pounds.
The Tarpon fishing has been good I had two guys from California tarpon fishing in the evening 24 we had 4 fish in the air and managed to land a 70 pounder, the following morning we were out again for a couple of hours and had two up and landed a 100+ pounder. That evening I had a trip with a 12 year old and his dad from Montana. I decide to try for a shark in the backcountry. Tarpon fishing is fun but it can get boring between fish. I anchored in a deep channel that the fish have been in; it proved the be the right move. We weren't there 20 minutes before we had our first fish a 40 pound Lemon. As we sat there we could see the fish hunting the flat with there fins out of water. We landed 7 fish the largest a 6 foot Lemon, that run over a 100 yards of the 20# line off the reel before it turned.
