Islamorada - Saltwater Fishing Report

Last week, I had a nice couple Bob and Marybeth Sroufe from Massachusetts, out for a half day to look for some Dorado. Bait was easy to catch. After a half hour on the bait patch: we headed offshore. A nice weed line was out in 250 feet, we put our baits out. I headed to a man-of-war bird further offshore. As we passed a 2X4, we were cover up with fish. Every drift produced fish. We kept enough for dinner and released the rest.
This weekend I had David and Lori Wiss from Boca out. The plan was to fish for snapper and grouper. I had a well full of pinfish. Our first drop was in 90 feet. There were a lot of yellowtails. On the bottom, we caught a couple of 22 inch black groupers. Our second drop was in 60 feet, the yellowtail action slowed but the bottom bite pickup. Dave caught over a dozen blacks and gags in an hour. He had one big fish on but it broke us off. Our last stop was in 35 feet on a patch. The bottom bite was hot. The first fish that came up were a pair of 3 pound mangrove snappers. Then the grouper moved in. David caught a 6 pound mutton and a 10 pound gag grouper. Live bait on the top kept Lori busy with cero mackerel. I was a good day, a preview of winter fishing.
