Islamorada - Saltwater Fishing Report

This is a nice time of the year to fish. The other day I had a charter in the backcountry; with a nice family; father and his two sons. They caught Seatrout, ladyfish, blue runners, jack crevalles, bluefish, three types of snappers Spanish and cero mackerel. They finished the trip by catching two lemon sharks to 70 pounds. All these fish in no more than 5 foot of water. The kids caught the most and biggest fish they ever seen. Fishing in Florida Bay is great.
Two weeks ago the tarpon had turned on in the local spots. I fished live mullet; and we caught fish regularly. Last week, the winds picked up; the water cooled and so did the tarpon. After this cold front; they will pickup again.
The reef still remains the most consistent fishing nice yellowtails. They moved into deeper water 50 to 90 feet is the best. A lot of good chum is the key. Some kings are still around. A little trace of #3 or #4 wire will catch them.
I went offshore for some MAHI MAHI last Thursday. A lot of weeds from 300 to 500 feet of water. Our biggest one was a 25 pound cow. We caught her off a man of war bird in 550 feet of water. This type of fishing is still hit or miss. The fish aren't that far, it is worth a couple of hour to try for them; there are some nice fish coming through.
