Upper Florida Keys & Islamorada

Islamorada - Saltwater Fishing Report

Over the past week, due to the high winds, I fished only backcountry. Early in the week, I found nice mangrove snappers around some islands in the park. They are moving in anticipation of the Aug. spawn on the reef. The following day I found great trout (big trout) action in a mud by Rankin key. Mixed in the mud were 4 foot sharks. I did a couple of night trips. On one we were targeting sharks. We landed 10 lemons to 60 pounds. What was great about it; is you see them coming across the flats. Another night I went tarpon fishing; we had two tarpon on and landed one. The fish eat live mullet. On Friday; I was scheduled to go Dorado fishing. I told the people that I wasn't going to take them or me out in the seas that were out there and travel out 25 miles. Not fun. They wanted to try in the back for some snappers for the table. It took us over an hour to fill the well with pilchards. The first spot we caught two nice snappers released a couple plus a 8 pound Goliath grouper. The second spot produced a 22 inch red grouper and two big mangrove snappers. The third move produced more nice snappers. All and all not a bad day; and we were able to have lunch.

I talk to a couple of captains who went offshore. One stayed on the reef, for Yellowtail. The snappers bite very good. The seas were so bad the only fished for a 2 hour before yielding. The second went out Dorado fishing. He found the fish out between 22 and 26 miles. the fishing was OK; but the seas were terrible.
