Upper Florida Keys & Islamorada

Islamorada - Saltwater Fishing Report

Over the past week, I fished Ed Goodgold and his wife Helene from New York City. On Monday, we tried for some Cero mackerels. I anchored up on a spot that I had caught them real good on Saturday. After an hour, of live bait chumming with pilchards not one cero showed up. We ran out to the gulf to some bomb holes. We landed 4 jewfish groupers from 8 to 12 pounds some snappers and Spanish mackerels. On Wednesday, we went into the ocean. The wind was still up; so we fished the 30 foot patch reefs. I could not find any pilchards, but the Ballyhoo cooperated. A school of 10+ pound Jack Crevalle showed up in our slick. We caught so many that we stooped fishing in hopes they were leave. We did manage to get a bait down to the bottom and a 15 pound Mutton snapper eat it. When the wind is blowing and water is a little dirty the patches are excellent fishing.

I fished a couple of guys from Great Britain, we went shark fishing. They landed 5 Lemon sharks from 50 to 100#. Great fun. There are some small tarpon at the bridges; but we couldn't get them to eat.

The sailfish are showing on the edge. The fish have been from 60 to 200 feet. They are chasing ballyhoo in the shallows. There are a lot of nice size cero mackerel in the 30 to 80 foot range and some Kings a little deeper.
