Snooks, big black drum, and more in FL Keys!

Islamorada - Saltwater Fishing Report

Had John fishing with me for 3 days this week down from DC. John is a small mouth bass fisherman up there and has his own guide business. We had some great opportunities fishing in the keys. 1st day we fished back at the cape. First jig (without bait) in the water hooks a fat snook! John fights it on very light tackle for over 10 minutes. He insistes I fish too, I hook a nice one and catch it. He catches 10 or so in total. Mixed in with sheepshead, black drum, reds. Poked around the rest of that day and caught more of the same, and finished day in some channels catching several nice size slot trout, keeping a few for dinner. Day 2 we tried same spot early but to no avail. We poked around and hit many run-offs and drains, picking at reds and black drums, lots of trout mixed in certain areas as well as ladyfish and jacks. Hooked something nice off the shoreline though pulled the hook. Wind laid out so we fished mackerels in the gulf which was good, saw one triple tail that wouldn't eat, and caught some mangrove snappers mixed in with the macks. Kept more for dinner. Day 3 we fished up in one of the bigger canal creek mouths. Fishing was steady and got better as tide slowed. We caught a big fat black drum close to 30 lbs, as well as some smaller ones, mixed in with trout and reds. Ran further up the cape and hit some other creeks, tide was very high though. Moved deep inside one to one of my favorite spots, several nice big sheepshead, few more black drums, and some decent redfish. John had a stellar time, staying right where I dock at Bud n' Mary's, and can't wait to come back in the spring for tarpon season!!!
