Tarpon Tarpon Tarpon!!!!

Capt. Richard Burson
May 13, 2009
Islamorada - Saltwater Fishing Report

The Tarpon are plentiful at this point. I am seeing them in skinny water so we have working feverishly to catch them on fly which is an amazing, like no other fight! Before you come to fish tarpon on fly even if you are an avid fly fisherman you will need to make sure to practice your distance cast. Many people fly fish however, it is very different when catching tarpon and bonefish on fly. Distance and accuacy matter. You will need to lay the fly just past their mouth and then strip your line so the fly is presented right in front of their mouths. You will also need to cast far enough so the fish never gets a glimps of the boat! Once they see the boat, it's over!

You will not have many shots so every cast is important...

Islamorada Fishing Forecast:

Tarpon will remain here for a few more months. Get down here quick, or plan a trip next year around this time.

Target Species:

Tarpon

More Fishing Reports:

I am a South Florida native who has been fishing the local waters from Biscayne Bay to Islamorda for over 20 years. After obtaining my captain's license, I have been chartering light tackle and fly fishing enthusiasts in the Key Largo area and Everglades National Park. My fishing speciality is targeting Snook, Redfish and Sea Trout in the backcountry and Bonefish, Tarpon and Permit on the ocean side flats that surround the upper keys. Lets have a great day on the water!
