Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report

Late afternoon thunderstorms and high afternoon temps are the norm right now, so morning fishing trips are the way to go. I have been targeting deeper water for Redfish and Trout. I've found most of the Redfish schooled up in the deeper turns of the creeks in depths of 8 to 12 feet. We have been experiencing very low tides the last few weeks, which force these fish to move to the deeper "holes". Almost all the backwater creeks from Sisters creek to Clapboard Creek have deep drops where the creek makes a sharp turn. The outer turns, where the bank is almost vertical, is the spot to pitch a jig tipped with a mud minnow or your favorite soft plastic. Once you contact the bottom, drag or hop the jig slowly. Very little movement is usually needed since the fish in a small area.

I have been targeting deep water docks along the St Johns River for Speckled Trout by also fishing jigs in the lower water column. Topwater plugs have produced a few nice trout over 4 lbs, but the better bite still has been down deep. Night fishing for Trout around lighted docks behind Blount Island and downtown can be a welcomed change of pace to the afternoon heat.
