When the Big Dog's Play!

Capt. James Howard
August 2, 2008
Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing July 27th in the creeks with Jack Ward and his second cousin Josh it was a work the edges chunk and wind kind of day…

After trying some float fishing the first hour and catching only one Trout and about 15 Mangrove Snapper's it was time to move on and try for the line pulling Red fish.

Jack is a fairly regular client and an avid angler also. He likes catching just about anything but loves the way a nice Red fish pulls in the shallow water. Can't blame him they are my favorite fish to catch in the back waters also. 2 to 3 foot of water a light action rod and reel and a 5 to 8lb Red fish equals you SPOILED!!!

We started working the edges throwing Mud minnows on quarter ounce jig heads. Working them real slow is the key. Also when you are on the trolling motor you can cover a lot of ground.

We had several nice Flounder 4 total 2 3lb reds and then we hit a stretch of bank where we got hammered back to back with Stud back water Reds. I don't catch them much larger than these 2 fish in that shallow water. The first fish was hooked by Jack and took all of 20 minutes to get to the boat and it hit the scale at a little over 10lbs. A fish like that will make a morning on the water in anyone's book!

But that wasn't the last of it. Just a few minutes later Josh hooked up with what seemed to be the same caliber red fish. This was Josh's first Red and it hit the scales right at 9lbs. What a first Red fish! He is now ruined when it comes to Red fish. I told him it would take a lot to satisfy him now for sure.

Thanks for a great time guys
