Inshore/nearshore report jacksonville area waters

Capt. Bob Cosby
July 27, 2008
Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report

Now that the Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament is over, maybe we can get back to normal. The boat ramps have been very busy. The water temperature has warmed up to the lower 80's, and the kingfish bit pretty well over the past week or so. Ribbonfish have been the ticket.

Some tarpon have been caught off our beaches using chumming techniques. I will be targeting the silver kings this coming week. Pogie pods are few and far between.

Upper and over slot reds have been biting fairly consistently at the jetties, though they seem to have tapered off the last few days. Our best day was 19 reds with 18 being oversize. The creeks and ICW have been slow.

Most of the good inshore reports have been coming from the Arlington area south past the Buckman Bridge, probably due to the high salinity levels. Large yellowmouth and speckled trout have been hitting in that area of the River as well as croakers and mangrove snapper.

You can definitely bend a stout rod drifting or slow trolling baits for sharks behind active shrimp boats. Surf fishing has been good for whiting and the occasional pompano.

Tight lines!
